Van Nuys Aircraft Rental
Built Around One of the Busiest GA Airports in the Country
Van Nuys aircraft rental puts you at Van Nuys Airport (KVNY), one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world. That means real-world radio work, real-world traffic sequencing, and real-world airspace experience every time you fly, not a quiet rural strip that leaves you unprepared for busy Southern California skies.
Renters and students flying out of our Van Nuys base get quick access to the San Fernando Valley, Burbank, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Studio City, and the greater Los Angeles area, plus fast routing out toward the coast, the mountains, and Catalina Island for weekend flying.
Because our aircraft rental fleet is based at a single, central Van Nuys location, checkout, scheduling, and dispatch stay simple. You will always know exactly where your airplane is and how to get to it.
Aircraft Rental Requirements
What It Takes to Rent With Us
Before you can rent airplane time solo, every renter completes a short qualification process. It exists to protect you, your passengers, and the fleet, and most pilots clear it in a single checkout flight. Get the full breakdown in our aircraft rental requirements and checkout guide.
Valid pilot certificate and current medical: a Private Pilot Certificate (or higher) and a current FAA medical, or BasicMed where applicable, are required before any solo aircraft rental.
Currency and proficiency: renters must meet standard FAA currency requirements, including a flight review within the last 24 calendar months.
Aircraft-specific checkout: a checkout flight with one of our instructors in the exact aircraft type you plan to rent, covering normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures.
Renter's insurance: proof of renter's insurance is required to protect you financially in the event of damage to a rented aircraft.
How The Discounted
Aircraft Rate Works
Effective January 2026, students and renters can unlock ActivePILOT aircraft discount rates through approved advance-payment options, commonly known in the industry as block time aircraft rental.
These discounts are applied after each lesson when the account keeps a positive balance over $500. Discount eligibility is valid only for the current phase of training and does not carry over to future ratings. Not sure which payment structure fits your flying? Compare block time vs. pay as you go aircraft rental pricing before you commit.
Aircraft Rate Discount: Students and renters can unlock $10 off the hourly aircraft rental rate with an initial block payment of $3,000.
Balance requirement: A positive balance over $500 must be maintained to automatically receive the aircraft discount at the end of each lesson.
Additional ratings: For each future phase of training, a new $3,000 initial block payment is required to continue receiving $10 off the hourly aircraft rental rate.
Pay in Advance Discount: Students can unlock 5% off the hourly aircraft rental rate and 10% off the hourly instructor rate by paying the estimated program cost in full before training begins.
Program transfer: Block times apply to all fleets of aircraft and are transferable to all programs currently offered by ActivePILOT.
Pay As You Go: Students are not required to make advance payments before lessons. With Pay As You Go, a valid card is kept on file and charges are made after each completed lesson for the instruction and aircraft time actually used.
Accepted payment methods: ActivePILOT accepts cash, check, credit card, debit card, Zelle, and Flight Schedule Pro's online payment system.
Referral credit: Bring a friend who is also interested in training and both accounts can receive a $180 flight training credit after the referral unlocks the Aircraft Rate Discount or completes 3 flight training lessons.
Refund policy: If training ends, remaining balances are eligible for a pro-rated refund issued within 20 business days, minus the original discount credit from the last 5 flight or ground lessons where a discount was included.
