Here is exactly what that process looks like, so you know what to bring and what to expect before you ever touch the yoke solo.

What You Need Before You Can Rent Solo

Three things have to be in place before any renter flies one of our aircraft without an instructor on board.

A valid pilot certificate. You need a Private Pilot Certificate or higher, appropriate for the aircraft category and class you plan to fly.

A current medical certificate, or BasicMed where your flying qualifies. Most private flying requires a current FAA medical certificate, though BasicMed is an accepted path for pilots and operations that meet its requirements. If you are not sure which category applies to you, that is a normal question to bring to your checkout.

Currency. You need a flight review within the last 24 calendar months to legally act as pilot in command. If your review has lapsed, we can help you get current again before you rent.

The Aircraft-Specific Checkout Flight

A certificate and a current medical get you in the door. They do not automatically get you the keys to a specific airplane.

Every renter completes a checkout flight with one of our instructors in the exact aircraft they plan to rent. That is standard practice across the industry, and it matters more than it sounds like it should. A Piper Warrior with a six-pack of steam gauges flies differently from one with dual Garmin G5 displays and a G650 GPS. Your checkout is where you get comfortable with the specific panel, fuel system, and handling quirks of that airframe before you are up there alone.

During the checkout, your instructor will cover:

• Normal procedures, including startup, taxi, takeoff, and landing patterns specific to that aircraft
• Abnormal and emergency procedures, so you know your options if something does not go as planned
• Systems and avionics familiarity, especially if the aircraft has a GPS navigator or glass panel you have not flown before

Renters who plan to fly more than one aircraft type, say a standardized Warrior for local flying and a more avionics-heavy Warrior for instrument work, complete a checkout in each. Renter’s Insurance: What It Protects and Why We Require It

Before you fly solo, you will need proof of renter’s insurance. This protects you financially if the aircraft is damaged while you have it, and it is a standard requirement across professionally run rental operations, not just at ActivePILOT.

Think of it the same way you would think about insuring a car you do not own outright. The aircraft is worth a significant amount of money, and a rental agreement puts some of that responsibility on you as the pilot in command. Renter’s insurance closes that gap so an unexpected event does not become a financial setback on top of a stressful day.

Renting as a Non-Student Rated Pilot

You do not need to be actively enrolled in a training program with us to rent from our fleet. Rated pilots who want proficiency flying, a cross-country to Catalina Island, or hour building for an upcoming rating can complete the same certificate, medical, currency, and checkout requirements and start booking aircraft.
